Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Dry Needling uses acupuncture needles to assist your recovery in a number of ways:

  • reduces pain by altering sensory thresholds and stimulating your own pain-relieving mechanisms within the central nervous system
  • reduces pain and tension by reducing muscle trigger point activity
  • helps healing of body tissues like tendons by stimulating blood flow around the inserted needle.

The needles are very fine (0.2 to 0.3mm diameter), so it will not feel like an injection you might receive from your doctor. Many Dry Needling treatments are painless or only mildly painful for the first minute, however in some situations (such as trigger points) it is beneficial for the treatment to reproduce your pain as it indicates that the needle is in the right location. At Teneriffe Physiotherapy we are usually conservative when needling you for the first time, just in case you have an adverse pain response.

Dry Needling is gaining strong acceptance in the medical fields due to the undeniable improvement clinicians see in outcomes achieved in treatment of difficult and common conditions such as tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendinopathy, spinal pain, sciatica, ITB pain syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, Trochanteric bursitis, chronic muscle trigger points, and headaches.
